Opening night in Lausanne
Mon, 07 Sep 2009
Markus Steffen opened the evening in Lausanne with a warm welcome to Kiev, Cape Town and Cairo, setting the tone for a night of expectation.
"Not every moment is historic, but this is a historic moment tonight." These were the words of Peter Warren as we looked forward to a night spent with our brothers and sisters around the world in "unity". We are indeed family, and both Darlene and Loren Cunningham both emphasized the importance of protecting and fighting for the unity that the Lord promises "commands (His) blessing."
After a colorful celebration of cultural performances from all four locations and sharing with each other our expressions of being "full of joy" (David Hamilton), Loren Cunningham continued by painting a beautiful array of the stones that form the foundations of Youth With A Mission. Honoring pioneers of the past, from Corrie Ten Boom to Joy Dawson, and reflecting on the growth of the University of the Nations Loren made a smooth transition on what to rejoice in next. Looking back on the first days, the magnitude of what is being done today and what is being dreamed for tomorrow was a great way to worship together.
Depicting the significance of the theme for this monumental event, "For such a time as this" Loren Cunningham recaptured the story of Ester, challenge all who heard, those in Ukraine, South Africa, Egypt and Switzerland.
Wrapping up a great evening, he brought us all into focus as we were reminded: "The supreme commander just wants to be close to us... and being close to Jesus is what it's all about." And finally, before all locations ended the night in their own way, Shirley Brownhill closed in beautiful words honoring the founder of the mission, the man that has come to mean so much to so many, has impacted nations (giving all the glory to Christ), and has set the foundation we now stand on, followed by a prayer honoring the true M.C. of the event... the One this is all for!
Surrounding the main event were the arrivals of over two hundred people from nearly all nations of the world. From the sound of children laughing at the back of the tent to the coffee and live music offered after the ceremony, I believe it is safe to say, tonight was a night not easily forgotten. And it is only the beginning for it set the stage for all that is to come in the days ahead! May the Lord God almighty receive all the praise and glory.
